If property development finance is to be used to make properties greener, the government must continue to cut the red tape surrounding planning.
This is the view of a spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government, who said that the government is taking steps to reduce carbon emissions.
"The government is already taking action in terms of retrofitting existing buildings, improving future design standards and cutting red tape in the planning system for the installation of green energy solutions", he explained.
However, he added that further steps can be taken to develop houses that are more energy efficient.
Almost half of the country's carbon emissions come from buildings, so offices, factories and shops must all have eco-standards in the future.
The spokesperson's comments came after the Prince's Foundation released a report on sustainable building.
It said that using regional products can benefit the environment and help the local economy.
